Americans 65 years and older represent an expanding population that will dramatically increase as the baby-boomer generation increases. Approximately one quarter of all these patients seen by primary care physicians will present with musculoskeletal pain consistent with an articular cartilage disease called osteoarthritis (OA). OA increases after the age of 40 in women and 50 in men and will affect about 50% of persons 65 and older.
